Lexington advances to Finals, again

Lexington – The Blue Sox swept Somerville with an 11-4 win Wednesday night and will play in the Intercity League finals for the 11th straight season. This will be the Sox 16th appearance in the finals, and they have won 12 championships since joining the league in 1995.

Lexington scored in the first inning for the first time this postseason. Jeff Costello (Lexington/Northeastern) leadoff with a four-pitch walk, stole second and came around to score on Ross Curley’s (Lexington/Bentley) RBI single.

The Blue Sox increased the lead to 4-1 through five innings and then put the game away with a seven-run sixth, the biggest inning of the postseason. Thomas Russo (Weston/Holy Cross) had the big hit in the inning with a bases-clearing double. He finished the night with four RBI, driving in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Drew Leenhouts (Franklin/Northeastern) made his first start of the 2017 postseason and picked up his fourth career postseason win. The southpaw pitched six innings, gave up six hits, struck out nine and allowed his first run in the postseason. The Somerville run snapped a streak of 24 2/3 consecutive shutout innings pitched by Leenhouts.

The Royals scored their first run in the fifth when Adam Johnson doubled with one out. After the second out, Jake Cintolo tripled to right to drive in Johnson cutting the lead to 4-1.

Somerville closed the final gap to seven scoring three times in the top of the seventh after the Sox had taken an 11-1 lead. Brian Campbell and Sean Cameron each had an RBI single for the Royals. The first run scored on a double play.
